Nuvoton Announces Joint Research with the University of Tokyo “MLC Operation with over 10-year Data-retention of TaOx ReRAM CiM for Low Energy Edge AI”

Kyoto, Japan, September 12, 2025 - Nuvoton Technology has been collaborating with the University of Tokyo on joint research aimed at realizing low-power edge AI semiconductor technology. This time, the University of Tokyo has successfully achieved both increased memory capacity and 10-year data retention through MLC (Multi-Level Cell) technology in CiM (Computation-in-Memory) based on ReRAM (resistive).

In conventional computers, power consumption from data transfers between processors, which perform data processing, and memory, which store data, has been a major challenge in overcoming the bottleneck. ReRAM CiM, built with analog ReRAM (resistive memory), integrates processing and storage to significantly reduce power consumption and is expected to resolve this bottleneck.

For further details, please refer to the University of Tokyo’s press release:

Nuvoton Technology will continue research and development to improve low-power edge AI semiconductor technology and contribute to the advancement of the AI field.

※This research was supported by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) under project JPNP23015.
